United Church of God - Race Relations

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Why does the committee have a Web site?
A. Having a Web site offers increased openness, visibility, and accessibility of information to people from all over the world. Additionally, this information can be read in the privacy of one's home.
Q. What is the purpose of this Web site?
A. The primary purpose is mentioned in the introduction on the Web site, "Much of the information on this Web site will call your attention to the first step toward improved race relations—identifying the problem."

The Mission Statement of the Race Relations Committee is: To promote understanding and tolerance among people of diverse racial, cultural and ethnic backgrounds by striving to reflect the mind of Jesus Christ.

The Race Relations Committee is part of the Focused Education Program of the United Church of God, an International Association ("UCGIA"). Therefore, the Web site will focus on race relations and educate our readers toward the overall goal of improved human relationships.
Q. Is the site a private site or a UCGIA approved site?
A. The site is approved by UCGIA. The Race Relations Committee strives to work under the umbrella of the UCG’s Focused Education Program and Ministerial Services. The UCG Race Relations Committee is comprised of ordained UCG ministers, who have sought the guidance of fellow ministers, members and the appropriate personnel for this Web site.
Q. Will it be linked to the UCGIA Web site?
A. Yes, this will enable people to see the church that we're associated with.
Q. Who will be allowed to put information on the site?
A. The information for the Race Relations Web site is supplied by the Race Relations Committee, which gleans input from those who visit the site as well as others.
Q. Will the site be available to everyone?
A. Yes, the site will be available to anyone who has access to the Internet.
Q. Will interracial marriage be addressed on the Web site?
A. If information on this topic in general became pertinent and helpful then perhaps it could be addressed.
Q. Will the site be interactive?
A. The site is intended to be somewhat of an electronic “library” as an educational tool on the topic of race relations. Therefore, the site has not been interactive however there has been email capability for optional comments.
Q. Why is a disclaimer at the bottom of the home page?
A. The disclaimer is in accordance with the church’s Web site policy—"Any other Web site maintained by a local congregation of UCGIA, or third parties claiming affiliation with UCGIA, or using its name in a way that is likely to convey such an affiliation, must display on the index or introductory page the following statement." This disclaimer helps direct users to the main corporate Web site for United, in the event that they thought that the current site they're viewing is the main United Web site.
Q. Why was the Web site down for a few weeks?
A. The Web site was "Under Construction" while we addressed the above questions. Additionally, some were under the impression that we endorsed everything stated on the non-UCG links (e.g., reports from newspapers, magazines, universities, and other sources). However, any non-UCG links are intended to be thought-provoking, educational tools that increase awareness and encourage a healthy dialogue of the issues. So the site was down while we sought ways to better achieve our mission-"To promote understanding and tolerance among people of diverse racial, cultural and ethnic backgrounds by striving to reflect the mind of Jesus Christ."
